Sally Shopper is dedicated to all who enjoy shopping and particularly those who buy local. When you receive a visit by the Mummers, part of the fun is trying to guess the mummers’ identities. This is quite a feat since the Mummers take pains to mask their voices, their gaits, and even their genders. Using her purse as part of the disguise, Sally may be someone who is visiting the community for the holidays. He or she may have moved away for work and is ‘home for Christmas’ or may be a “come from away” (CFA); that is a friend or cousin who resides elsewhere and has come to visit and enjoy the tradition of Mummering. Our Sally Shopper Mummer is best described by “Now that one’s a stranger if there ever was one,”; a line from The Mummer’s Song (1983) by Simani.
