Made in NL, the Mummer’s body frame, the clothing, the accordion and the base are all hand crafted by NL artisan Jackie.
The fiddle held by our Mummer is one of the most popular instruments of Newfoundland traditional music. Many Newfoundland fiddlers learned to play at a young age while sitting around the kitchen table. The Mummers and their hosts enjoy a “scuff” (dance) when the fiddle music starts.
Our Mummer wears the traditional “facecloth”, that is a piece of curtain or drapery, a pillow slip or flour sack.
The stocking cap, matching cuffs and jumper or guernsey worn by styles 1 to 12 are similar to the traditional wool knit caps, mitts and sweaters, worn by Petty Harbour fishermen.
The one piece combination underwear or "long johns" worn by our style 12 Mummer is a disguise commonly worn by Mummers.
